Our History

A History of Dragon Boating and Breast Cancer Survivors

In the fall of 1995, Dr. Don McKenzie, a sports medicine physician and exercise physiologist, was conducting a research project at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC.  This study looked at breast cancer survivors who had been advised to restrict activities involving the upper body.  Dr. McKenzie found that in fact exercise was beneficial to recovery, in particular upper body exercise. In February 1996 the first Dragon Boat team was formed.  The only criteria to join this team was a history of breast cancer.  Age, athletic ability, paddling experience - none of this mattered.

Since then, Dragon Boat teams welcome survivors and supporters of breast cancer and have been formed in cities across Canada and throughout the world.

Chinese History

Dragon Boat Racing originated in China and its history goes back more than 2000 years.  The first people to participate were superstitious Chinese villagers to avert misfortune and encourage rains for prosperity.  This has now grown into a cultural celebration in cities worldwide.

Long, narrow boats hold 20-22 paddlers, a drummer, and a steers-person. On festival days, paddlers decorate the boats with colourful dragon heads and tails.

Our History

Abreast in the Rockies was founded in 2006. Our team is made up of survivors and supporters of breast cancer.
